10,000 Support Homeless Charity Yet Some Are Forced To Return To Sleeping Rough

Saturday morning marked the end of homeless charity the Cyrenians' 10 day protest camp against Aberdeen City Council's drastic funding cuts.  During the protest some 10,000 people signed the Cyrenians petition to save services yet it is still a harsh reality that some of the protesters will now be force to return to sleeping in doorways and carparks.

Some of the people who are supported by the Cyrenians who took part in the protest are homeless but not roofless, this means that they are receiving support from the Cyrenians to sustain a new tenancy and prevent them from becoming roofless again.  However a significant number are roofless and after the protest camp was packed up there is no where in the city for these people to go and so they were forced to go back to sleeping rough.

The Cyrenians Chief Executive, Paul Hannan, said: "The reality of this situation brings home to us how vital our services are to very vulnerable people.  The fact that some people will have to return to sleeping rough shows that Aberdeen City is not doing enough at present to support people experiencing homelessness so to cut the budget even further seems ludicrous!".

The 10 day protest began on Thursday 27th March and ended on Saturday morning just before the mass protest march.  Over that ten days Cyrenians staff, clients, volunteers and supporters slept in tents pitched out side Marshall College.  There was a huge amount of support for the protest from passers-by, other members of the public and local voluntary organisation and community groups.
