CHANCE FOR A NEW BEGINNING FOR ABERDEEN CITY COUNCIL?

Today the Accounts Commission published their findings following a hearing into the performance of Aberdeen City Council. (http://www.audit-scotland.gov.uk/docs/local/2008/bv_080530_aberdeen_city_findings.pdf)

Paul Hannan, Chief Executive, welcomed the recommendations "We certainly believed that Aberdeen City Council did not appreciate the extent of the problems that they were facing and we now hope that the major deficiencies in the way that the Council operates are rectified within a reasonably short period."

He added, "We hope that the publication of these findings brings about a new approach from Aberdeen City Council and we are more than willing to engage with them constructively to assist with overcoming the major problems that they have to address."

He said, "We particularly welcome the recommendation to review the organisation structure as the splitting in to 3 neighbourhoods has not proved effective and neither has the split between operations and strategy".

"The only concern that the Cyrenians have with the findings is that they make no reference to the need to engage more effectively with partners", said Mr Hannan.

"They have taken me off the street and given me a roof over my head. I get all my meals everyday. I get a lot of help from Stopover and they care a lot about me. I don't know where I would be if Stopover hadn't taken me off the streets."
