Begging Outreach Project

Begging Outreach Worker

Following an apparent increase in the numbers of people begging on the streets of Aberdeen, the Cyrenians undertook to provide an outreach service from the Summer Street Project and Community Support Service, which would focus on offering practical assistance.

From the outset it was clear that many of those begging had a variety of complex issues arising from homelessness, poor physical and mental health, substance misuse, financial debt or a combination of these. The workers were able to highlight the varying needs emerging and make recommendations about how services could better engage with those that beg to have their support needs met and offering alternative routes out of begging. The initiative has developed good joint working relationships with other agencies such as the Police and healthcare professionals and has helped to develop, as part of a wider city begging strategy, a dedicated outreach resource.

Quotes

Rod Leach, General Manager, Number 1 Restaurant, Aberdeen: "I was delighted to offer an auction item at the 2008 business dinner and very pleased it raised so much.  It is rewarding to see such a commedable charity raise as much as it did on what was a very successful, well organised evening".
