Get your heads down to help the homeless (Sleepout 2010)
People across the Northeast are signing up to spend a night sleeping in the car park at the Aberdeen Exhibition Centre to raise money for local homeless charity, The Cyrenians. The event Sleepout 2010 is organised by the charity and has been running for the past 19 years. Over this time the event has raised over £350 000 for services for homeless people locally.
This year’s Sleepout takes place on Friday 22nd January from 7pm to 7am and people will be bedding down in the car park, or inside the P & J arena, at the AECC and the Cyrenians are asking participants to bring along there own essential items such as sleeping bags, hats and warm clothing to help them keep warm on the night. There will also be prizes for best dressed hot water bottles, best hat and best cardboard sleeping area, shelter or hut.
Refreshment will be available on the night as will entertainment, with several local bands signing up to entertain the sleepouters. These bands include The Alligator haters, Mine, Vierleft, Kashmir Red and The Tijuana Sun.
The Tijuana Sun Guitar player Kris Harris commented "Our sole aim is to raise as much money as possible for this extremely worthwhile cause. The event will be crowded with an array of eclectic live music from a host of Aberdeen's top local talent. Sleepout 2010 is destined to be the biggest yet!"”
Cyrenians Fundraiser Alisdair Caulfield said “This year’s Sleepout promises to be an extremely exciting and worthwhile event. There will certainly be a lot of great entertainment on offer thanks to the fantastic local bands who have offered to play however there will also be quiet sleeping areas for those wishing to get a good night sleep. We are very excited by the volume of registrations we have received so far and look forward to breaking all previous fundraising records. There are still spaces available and we would urge people to sign up soon”
Local businesses including the AECC, are supporting Sleepout 2010 by providing their services at a reduced price, these include Thains, Chap Construction, G4 Security and Atmosphere Lighting and Sound.
Registration closes on Wednesday 20th January.
