Ellie has been volunteering with Aberdeen Cyrenians since the start of 2020, using her marketing and communication skills to help us make change.
We caught up with Ellie to find out why she wanted to volunteer.
Tell us what do you do for the organisation?
I volunteer with the Fundraising team, helping with fundraising ideas and creating content for social media and the website.
How did you find out about volunteering at Aberdeen Cyrenians?
My university course leader shared this opportunity with my class, and I thought it sounded interesting, so I got in touch. I am currently doing a journalism degree, so I was drawn to the writing aspects of this position, but I also liked the idea of working with a charity that helps people in my home city.
What made you want to volunteer?
I have volunteered in a shop and at events in the past, and really enjoyed those experiences. I had hoped to volunteer again doing something different, so when I found out that Aberdeen Cyrenians were looking for volunteers, I jumped at the chance.

How has your understanding of homelessness changed since you started volunteering here?
I had a very basic understanding of homelessness before but volunteering here has quickly taught me a lot. I also had no idea of the number of great services Aberdeen Cyrenians offer and the wide range of people they work with.
What would you say to other students looking to volunteer here?
I would say go for it! I’ve been made to feel very welcome and it’s a great opportunity to meet new people and gain experience. It is also a nice break from university work that feels worthwhile. Aberdeen Cyrenians do a lot of amazing work, so it feels great to be involved. They were flexible with when I could volunteer so it’s easy to fit as much time as you can around your studies!
