Aberdeen Cyrenians started life as a soup kitchen run by student volunteers. That ethos of volunteering and direct community support remains at the heart of what we do and it is essential in allowing us to provide the range of support that our service users rely on.

We have a team of around 100 dedicated regular volunteers who give up their time to help support people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness, or who are affected by other forms of social exclusion.

What's involved

Our team of volunteers cover a range of tasks, from cooking and door duty at Street Alternatives sessions, to preparing food parcels, driving and donation collection and sorting and supporting with Fundraising activities.

All volunteers have the full support of our dedicated Volunteer Coordinators to ensure they are trained, comfortable and getting the most from their volunteering experience.

We have four main types of volunteering opportunities:

Regular volunteer team

After going through our recruitment and induction process, including reference and PVG checks, this team makes a regular commitment to volunteer with the charity. We ensure all our regular volunteers receive training appropriate to their role and the support required so that while making a huge difference to the lives of many they are also able to learn new skills, make great friendships and have an enjoyable volunteering experience.

Ad hoc volunteer support

We also need support at different times of the year with fundraising events and campaigns.

We advertise these opportunities in our online Volunteering portal.

Seasonal volunteers

We recruit seasonal volunteers to support us through the Harvest and Christmas seasons.

Recruitment for seasonal volunteers opens in late June so please check back then.

Corporate/group volunteering

We also have opportunities for corporate teams or other groups to come and volunteer on a one-off basis throughout the year. This is generally to help with a specific task such as sorting donations, painting/decorating, making up food parcels, or help with a fundraising event.

I’ve been a Volunteer since 2015 and week after week I’m amazed by the commitment shown from staff and volunteers to provide various services to meet the needs of some of our most vulnerable adults. This coupled with meeting resilient service users who are so full of character is what makes me enjoy every minute I spend at Street Alternatives!
